About NOPE: why we built a quit app without shame

Last reviewed 2026-07-27 · by the NOPE team at Bit Microsystems LLC

NOPE exists because most people who try to quit smoking cold turkey go back to it, and most quit apps respond to a slip by breaking a streak and making you feel like you failed — we built something that expects the slip and keeps going anyway.

Most people who try to quit smoking do not succeed on the first attempt, and cold turkey — stopping outright on a chosen day, with no ramp-down — is the hardest version of that attempt for a lot of smokers. It asks you to go from a full daily habit to zero overnight, with no bridge in between. Some people manage it. Many don't, and when they slip, a lot of the apps built to help them respond by breaking a streak counter, resetting a badge, or otherwise treating a single cigarette as a failure of character. That reaction is exactly backwards: a slip is data, not a verdict, and an app that shames you for it is optimizing for a number on a screen instead of for you actually quitting.

NOPE was built around a different premise: that a gradual, planned reduction to zero is a legitimate way to quit, that logging what actually happened is more useful than logging what looks good, and that the moment right before you decide to smoke deserves more attention than the moment after.

The design principles that follow from that

  1. Taper, not cliff
A daily allowance that steps down to zero by a date you choose
Onboarding asks how much you currently smoke, what it costs you, how long you've smoked, and what's holding you back, and builds a plan from that — not a generic template.
  2. Honest logging beats flattering logging
Going over your allowance is logged, not punished
Smoke more than your plan allowed on a given day and NOPE records it and recalibrates — no streak reset, no lockout screen, no guilt copy. A tool that hides your real numbers to keep you feeling good is a tool that can't help you get better.
  3. Breathe before you decide
The SOS room asks you to breathe first, choose second
A craving isn't a decision you make calmly — it's a spike that passes. NOPE's SOS flow opens with about a minute of guided 4-7-8 breathing before it ever asks whether you smoked or held out, because the honest answer is more likely to arrive after the spike has passed than during it.
  4. Cite sources for health claims
We link the CDC, the American Cancer Society, and similar bodies rather than asserting numbers ourselves
Recovery timelines, lung-function claims, and similar content on this site link back to where they came from. If we can't point to a source, we don't state it as fact.

What NOPE deliberately is not

Not a medical device

NOPE does not diagnose, treat, or claim to cure nicotine addiction, and nothing in the app is medical advice. It's behavioral support: allowance tracking, breathing exercises, affirmations, and a record of your progress. If you want or need a clinical route — nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medication, counseling — talk to a doctor or call a quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW in the US). NOPE is a companion to that kind of support, not a substitute for it.

NOPE is also not ad-supported and it does not sell user data. There are no ads inside the app, we don't use your data to train AI models, and we don't collect the kind of information a quit app has no legitimate reason to want — no location tracking, no contacts access, no health-record integration, no cross-app tracking identifiers. The quitwithnope.com website itself uses Google Analytics to understand traffic to pages like this one; the app is a separate, more tightly scoped product.

Who makes it

NOPE is built by Bit Microsystems LLC, a small independent team. We're not a hospital system, a pharmaceutical company, or a venture-backed health platform with a press office — we're a small team that built a tool we thought should exist, and we maintain it directly. That means updates come from people who actually read the support inbox, and it also means we're candid about being small: we don't have a research department, and none of the health information on this site is original research — it's public-health sourcing, linked wherever we use it.

It's a paid subscription, and here's what the money is for

NOPE is free to download with a 7-day free trial, then $4.99/month or $49.99/year (about $4.17/month), billed by Apple or Google and cancellable anytime in your device's subscription settings. We'd rather say plainly what that money pays for than pretend the app runs on goodwill: it covers the AI model calls behind your three daily affirmations, the servers that sync your progress across devices, and keeping the whole thing ad-free rather than funding it by selling attention or data. A subscription model means our incentive is for the app to be worth staying subscribed to — not to maximize time in-app or ad impressions.

Questions, bug reports, feedback on the taper math, or anything else — email hello@quitwithnope.com and a person on the team will read it. We don't have a phone line or a chat widget; email is the real front door.

Common questions

Why did you build a quit-smoking app around tapering instead of cold turkey?

Because cold turkey — stopping outright with no ramp-down — is the hardest version of quitting for a lot of smokers, and going straight from a full habit to zero overnight fails many people on the first try. NOPE instead builds a daily cigarette allowance that steps down to zero by a quit date you choose, so the stop is planned rather than a single hard cliff.

What happens in NOPE if I smoke more than my daily allowance?

It gets logged, not punished. There's no streak reset, no lockout screen, and no shaming copy — going over your allowance simply recalibrates the plan. The premise is that honest logging is more useful for actually quitting than logging designed to make you feel good.

Is NOPE a medical treatment for nicotine addiction?

No. NOPE is behavioral support — allowance tracking, guided breathing, affirmations, and progress tracking — and it is not a medical device. It doesn't diagnose, treat, or cure anything, and it isn't a replacement for nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medication, or a quitline like 1-800-QUIT-NOW in the US.

Does NOPE sell my data or show ads?

No. There are no ads inside the app, we don't sell user data, and we don't use your data to train AI models. We also don't collect location, contacts, or health-record data. The quitwithnope.com website uses Google Analytics, but that's separate from the app itself.

Who is behind NOPE?

NOPE is made by Bit Microsystems LLC, a small independent team, reachable directly at hello@quitwithnope.com. It's not a hospital system or a large health-tech company — it's a small team maintaining a tool we built and use ourselves.

How much does NOPE cost and what does the subscription pay for?

NOPE is free to download with a 7-day free trial, then $4.99/month or $49.99/year, billed by Apple or Google and cancellable anytime. That subscription covers the AI behind your daily affirmations, server costs for syncing your progress, and keeping the app ad-free instead of funded by selling attention or data.

Quit gently, not all at once.

NOPE builds a daily cigarette allowance that steps down to zero by a quit date you pick — with one-tap breathing for the hard moments.
